What to Expect When Replacing Your Roof

Making the Decision to Replace Your Roof

Are you considering replacing your roof but aren't sure if it's the right time? On average, roofing replacements can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the size of your home and the materials you choose. However, it is not uncommon for a roof replacement to cost even more than this. With so much money on the line, it is important that you replace your roof at the right time and not too soon.

You may want to replace your roof if:

  • Your current roof is at the end of its lifespan
  • You are having chronic repair issues with your existing roof
  • The cost of repairs for your current roof meets or exceeds the price of a full replacement
  • You are renovating your home, and it makes sense to replace the roof now
  • You want to upgrade to a different material that better suits your needs

So, you have decided to replace your roof. What comes next? Keep reading to find out!

Step 1: Schedule an Inspection with a Professional, Local Roofer

The first thing you should do after you have decided to replace your roof is to schedule an inspection with an experienced, local roofing company, like Divine Roofing, Inc. You should always schedule an assessment with a roofer before you purchase any roofing materials.

During your inspection and consultation, our roofer will:

  • Survey your existing roof
  • Measure your roof
  • Discuss your goals for your new roof
  • Go over all of your roofing options
  • Review the roof replacement process

Choosing a roofing company can be a challenge. We always recommend that people work with a local roofer from the Colorado Springs area. A local roofing company will not only understand your needs, but they will also be there after the installation to answer any questions you may have. Step 2: Get Your Property Ready

After choosing your roofer and ordering your new roofing materials, you want to get your property ready for installation. Before your new shingles, underlayment, and other materials are delivered, you will want to clear a space for them and move any vehicles away from your home. Ask your roofer where you should direct the delivery drivers to deliver your new roofing materials.

You will likely also need to order a dumpster or garbage container from the city. This will be used to dispose of your old roofing materials. Make sure the dumpster is placed close enough to where the roofers will be working but not so close it is in the way.

As you prepare your property, please stay in contact with your roofer to ensure everything is ready to go when they arrive. This will help ensure a smooth installation without delays.

Step 3: Remove the Old Roof & Prep for the New One

The old shingles and underlayment must be removed before your new shingles can be installed. This is not something you should do yourself. It is better to let the roofing company do this as they have the appropriate equipment to remove whatever type of roofing you have. Additionally, you should always let the roofers do any removal work because you don't want to risk damaging the structure of your roof by doing it yourself.

While removing your old roofing, your roofer will also be able to change out your old flashing and do other important prep work. Similarly, they will also note any damage (such as water damage to your roof decking) they come across and discuss repair options with you. All of this is part of getting your roof ready to lay the new materials.

Step 4: Put Down Underlayment & Lay the New Roof

Before your new shingles go down, your roofer will install your new underlayment. The underlayment acts as a water and ice barrier, protecting your roof decking and structure from water damage should moisture make its way under your shingles (this can sometimes happen during bad snow, hail, or rainstorms or in high winds).

Once the underlayment is down, it is time to install the new roof. This is the most exciting part! As your new shingles go down, your home will go from looking like a construction site to totally transformed in a matter of hours. In addition to making your roof look beautiful, our roofers always ensure that roofing materials are installed correctly and per the manufacturer's instructions.

After Installation

Once your new roof installation is complete, be sure to spend some time going over the installation with your roofers. Ask any questions, and be sure to go over proper care and maintenance. This is especially important if you've chosen a new material or are a new homeowner unfamiliar with roof maintenance.

At Divine Roofing, Inc., we love facilitating a roof transformation, and we are always here to answer any questions you may have, both during installation and after. Give us a call today to get started on your roof replacement.
